Diagnosis

There are a few procedures to diagnose dysgraphia, the most common of which being the Beery VMI test. This and a newer method, utilizing machine learning, will be expanded upon below.

Procedures for Diagnosis

Dysgraphia is (Dysgraphia, 2022):

  • More common in boys than girls

  • More common in children with autism and ADHD

  • Present in 5 to 20% of people, range is large due to misdiagnosis

Beery VMI

Beery Developmental Test of Visuomotor Integration (VMI) is composed of three subtests: Visual Motor Integration, Visual Perception, and Motor Coordination (Dysgraphia, 2022). The first test has the students recreate increasingly complex shapes from a model. The second test has students compare shapes and match similar shapes (Dysgraphia, 2022). The third test has the student trace out the interior of shapes without crossing other lines (Dysgraphia, 2022).

Machine Learning

In a recent study (Drotar & Dobes, 2020), machine learning was used to predict if handwriting samples were affected by dysgraphia. The machine learning software was able to detect dysgraphia with about 79.5% accuracy, even with a mixed set of samples. A limitation to their study was that the combination of age ranges prevented age-specific data from being collected (Drotar & Dobes, 2020).
